Celebrating a Decade of Literacy: KHOU's Turn the Page Campaign
In 2023, KHOU 11 is proud to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its transformative Turn the Page campaign, an initiative dedicated to fostering literacy among children in Houston. This remarkable project has succeeded in placing thousands of books into the hands of young readers, helping them to build their own home libraries—a critical step in nurturing a love for reading and learning.
The Power of Books in Building Futures
Books not only provide entertainment but also equip children with the knowledge and skills necessary for their development. Kayla Hand, Executive Director of Books Between Kids, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "Our mission is to help kids build their own home library, so they can dive into different worlds and explore ideas. Reading is a foundational skill that relates directly to future success." Hand’s organization has collaborated with KHOU for a decade, processing donated books to distribute to children across the city.
A Community Effort: Engaging Volunteers
The campaign's recent milestone celebration involved volunteers from all walks of life, including KHOU 11’s General Manager David Loving and other staff members. They came together at the Books Between Kids warehouse, engaging in hands-on activities such as sorting, packing, and labeling the books. "It’s one of the best parts of being a local broadcaster; it makes you feel good to contribute to the community," Loving remarked, highlighting the importance of local media being directly engaged in community upliftment.
Making a Difference, One Book at a Time
The significance of the Turn the Page campaign extends beyond its logistics. It embodies the heart and spirit of Houston—a city that thrives on community involvement and support. With over 150 drop-off locations across the Houston area this year alone, the campaign aims to reach its goal of collecting 40,000 new or gently used books. This not only highlights the increase in participation but also underscores the collective responsibility to ensure that children have access to books.
Books as a Gateway to Understanding
Volunteers shared their personal motivations for participating. Katerina Arroyos stated, "Books are essential for helping children understand the world around them." This sentiment echoes the campaign’s goal of making literacy accessible to all children, enabling them to explore diverse cultures, ideas, and histories through the pages of a book.
Future of Literacy and Community Initiatives
The success of KHOU's Turn the Page campaign serves as a model for future literacy initiatives not only locally but nationwide. As the collective efforts continue, the participating organizations and volunteers stand united in their mission: to empower Houston’s youth through reading. This unique partnership demonstrates how local media can drive impactful community change, further emphasizing the role of books in shaping a brighter future.
As this campaign continues to thrive, it serves as a reminder that every child deserves the chance to read, learn, and expand their horizons. Join the movement—donate a book today and help spread the joy of reading in our Houston community.
