Through their organization, Jazz Houston, they offer high school students exceptional training and performance opportunities, demonstrating how transformative music can be for young people.
Jazz Houston: A Vibrant Musical Initiative
Founded by Gardner and his wife, Belinda, Jazz Houston began as a professional orchestra in 2016. By 2020, they expanded their vision to include a youth orchestra aimed at Houston high school students. This initiative affords young musicians the unique opportunity to learn directly from seasoned professionals and perform with some of the greatest names in the jazz world.
"We knew that passing it on to the younger generation and exposing them to all the beauties of it had to be a part of what we are doing here," Gardner explained, emphasizing the importance of nurturing the next generation in jazz.
The Power of Live Performance and Education
Both Marsalis and Gardner believe in the profound impact of live music performances, as evidenced by the recent showcase of the Jazz Houston Youth Orchestra at the Hobby Center. This event provided a platform for students to shine and gain invaluable experience. Throughout the year, approximately 60 students audition for a spot in the youth orchestra, but only 22 are selected, showing the competitive yet rewarding nature of the program.
Gardner accompanies students on trips to significant cities, such as New York and San Francisco, where they meet established musicians and visit top college programs. These experiences prove essential in broadening their horizons and deepening their jazz education.
