Houston Defeats Cincinnati as Weigman, Thomas and Sanford Lead Cougars to Big 12 Victory
The Houston Cougars continued their strong season with a victory over Cincinnati, improving to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in Big 12 Conference play behind an effective offensive performance led by quarterback Conner Weigman, receiver Amari Thomas and running back Re'Shaun Sanford.
Houston established an early advantage with two touchdown receptions by Thomas, then answered Cincinnati's attempts to rally with additional scores from Weigman and Sanford.
The Cougars opened the game with an impressive offensive possession that demonstrated their ability to move the football through both the air and on the ground.
Weigman connected with tight end Patrick Overmyer and receiver Trent Walker, while Sanford supplied important rushing yardage. Houston also converted a fourth-and-one opportunity to keep its opening drive alive.
The possession ended when Weigman found Thomas in the end zone for the game's first touchdown.
Houston's defense followed with an early stop, forcing Cincinnati to punt after quarterback JC French struggled to find openings against tight coverage and an aggressive pass rush.
The Cougars quickly returned to work.
Weigman connected with Kobe Young for a substantial gain before Sanford added another productive run. Facing third-and-seven, Houston called a bubble screen to Thomas, who followed excellent blocking and raced into the end zone for his second touchdown.
The play gave Houston a 14-0 lead and established Thomas as an important factor in the Cougars' offensive success.
Cincinnati responded by relying on its rushing attack.
Running back Cole Tabb helped the Bearcats sustain possessions, while French contributed with his mobility. Cincinnati eventually found the end zone when Tabb caught a pass in the corner for a touchdown.
Houston continued creating opportunities through its passing game.
Weigman connected with Overmyer on a deep crossing route, producing another significant gain. The quarterback also demonstrated his running ability, eventually lunging across the goal line for a touchdown.
Cincinnati remained competitive with a touchdown involving tight end Gavin Grover, who took advantage of a well-executed fake and raced toward the pylon for the score.
The Bearcats also found rushing opportunities with Payne, whose ability to reverse direction created additional yardage.
However, Houston's ground game became increasingly important as the contest progressed.
Sanford repeatedly found openings behind the Cougars' offensive line, including a quick run up the middle that produced a first down.
He later delivered one of Houston's most impressive offensive plays, breaking free for a long touchdown run that helped the Cougars maintain control.
The combination of Sanford's rushing, Weigman's versatility and Thomas' receiving ability gave Cincinnati several different offensive threats to defend.
Houston also benefited from contributions by running back Mahi Hughes, who helped the Cougars maintain possession late in the contest.
With the outcome effectively decided, Hughes made a heads-up play by sliding down rather than continuing his run, allowing Houston to move into victory formation and exhaust the remaining clock.
For head coach Willie Fritz, the victory represented another important step in Houston's progress through the Big 12 schedule.
The Cougars demonstrated offensive balance, effective execution in critical situations and the ability to respond when Cincinnati generated momentum.
Thomas' two early touchdowns established the foundation, while Weigman and Sanford supplied the additional production needed to secure the win.
Houston's victory improved its record to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in conference play, keeping the Cougars firmly in the Big 12 race.
