South Carolina extended its Southeastern Conference winning streak to four games Saturday, defeating Texas A&M in a defensive struggle at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia. Quarterback LaNorris Sellers delivered the decisive touchdown despite playing much of the second half with an injured ankle.
The Gamecocks entered the contest ranked No. 21 in the College Football Playoff standings, with both teams facing significant pressure to remain in postseason contention.
Texas A&M established an early advantage behind quarterback Marcel Reed and running back Rueben Owens II.
Owens repeatedly found openings in the South Carolina defense, including a substantial first-quarter run that moved the Aggies deep into Gamecocks territory.
However, Texas A&M struggled to finish promising possessions.
An attempted fake field goal failed, and the Aggies eventually settled for a field goal to take a 3-0 lead.
South Carolina responded with an explosive offensive series.
Sellers connected with tight end Brady Hunt for a 40-yard gain before finding Donovan Murph for another first down. Running back Isaiah Auguste advanced the football near the goal line, setting up a touchdown pass from Sellers to Mazeo Bennett.
The score gave South Carolina a 7-3 advantage.
The Gamecocks threatened again when Bennett broke free for a 64-yard reception, but Texas A&M's defense forced a fumble on a subsequent sack and recovered the football.
Reed directed another productive Aggies possession, connecting with Mario Craver and other receivers to move into scoring position.
But South Carolina's defensive pressure again prevented a touchdown.
Kicker David Olano converted his second field goal, reducing the Gamecocks' halftime advantage to 7-6.
Texas A&M regained the lead early in the second half.
Owens continued running effectively, while Reed connected with Isaiah Horton for an important gain. Olano finished the possession with a 44-yard field goal, putting the Aggies ahead 9-7.
The contest then became a defensive battle marked by missed opportunities.
Olano, who had entered the game without a missed field goal this season, missed a 30-yard attempt. South Carolina subsequently missed a 49-yard field goal of its own.
Sellers, visibly affected by his ankle injury, struggled at times with accuracy and mobility.
Nevertheless, he continued directing the Gamecocks' offense and eventually moved South Carolina into field-goal range.
A 43-yard kick restored the Gamecocks' lead at 10-9.
Texas A&M had opportunities to respond, but penalties, dropped passes and South Carolina's defensive pressure repeatedly disrupted its possessions.
One particularly unusual sequence involved a muffed punt that initially appeared to give South Carolina possession. Following video review, officials determined that an Aggies player was touching the football while out of bounds, allowing Texas A&M to retain possession.
The Aggies subsequently moved into South Carolina territory, but Reed was stopped on fourth down when the Gamecocks brought additional pressure.
That defensive stand set up the game's defining moment.
Despite his injured ankle, Sellers kept the football on a designed option play and broke through the Texas A&M defense for a touchdown, extending South Carolina's advantage to 17-9.
The Aggies mounted one final drive.
Reed completed several important passes, including a late connection with Horton that moved Texas A&M inside the 10-yard line.
But South Carolina's defense held firm.
After an incomplete pass with three seconds remaining, Reed faced pressure on the final play and could not complete a touchdown pass.
The Gamecocks celebrated their fourth consecutive SEC victory, while Texas A&M was left to reflect on an afternoon when it moved the football effectively but failed to reach the end zone.
Owens provided the Aggies with a productive rushing performance, surpassing 130 yards, and Reed demonstrated resilience during the final possession.
However, South Carolina's defense proved decisive in critical situations.
For Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer, the victory reinforced his team's improved form and determination following a difficult start to the season.
Sellers' performance, particularly his game-clinching touchdown while injured, provided the defining moment in a hard-fought conference victory.
